Joplin imposes burn ban amid hot, dry conditions

A burn ban has been imposed in Joplin.
The fire marshal ordered the ban following several recent fires that quickly grew out of control amid extreme heat and dry vegetation.
The order covers recreational fires and open cooking fires within city limits.
The ban will remain in effect until conditions improve and measurable rain falls across the region.
However, the National Weather Service forecast offers little hope for immediate relief.
Joplin is expected to remain dry through Labor Day. A slight chance of isolated thunderstorms returns Saturday, but widespread rainfall is not expected.
Longer-range forecasts favor continued hot and mostly dry weather into mid-September.
Residents are urged to avoid any activity that could ignite dry vegetation.
