A large tire fire that broke out Saturday evening in Nevada, Missouri, is being allowed to burn under firefighter supervision after crews successfully protected a nearby business.

Fire Chief Taylor McKlintic says firefighters responded to the blaze at David's Tire at 1300 N. Click St.

When crews got there, they found piles of shredded tires burning, with intense flames and heat threatening the business.

Firefighters were able to eliminate the immediate threat to the building.

However, because of the extreme heat and the need to conserve the city's water supply, officials then decided to let the remaining tire piles burn down rather than continue efforts to extinguish them.

The Nevada Fire Department continued monitoring the fire Sunday while coordinating with the Missouri DNR and EPA.

The cause of the fire has not been announced.

Additional updates are expected in the coming days.
