Mike Mazzei has won Oklahoma’s Republican nomination for governor, defeating Attorney General Gentner Drummond in a closely fought runoff Tuesday.

Mazzei leads Drummond by 2,045 votes with an estimated 99% counted:

* Mazzei: 185,542 — 50.3%

* Drummond: 183,497 — 49.7%

Mazzei, a Tulsa businessman and former state senator, will face Democratic state House Minority Leader Cyndi Munson in the November general election.

The winner will replace Republican Gov. Kevin Stitt, who cannot seek another term.

Mazzei emphasized President Donald Trump’s endorsement during the campaign and promised to move Oklahoma further to the right.

Drummond campaigned on his record as attorney general and his opposition to a proposed aluminum smelter in northeastern Oklahoma.

Republicans will be heavily favored in November.

Oklahoma has not elected a Democratic governor since 2006.
