Missouri Southern closed Oct. 17-18 for fall break

Joplin, MO – The campus of Missouri Southern State University will be closed Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 17-18, for fall break.

Activities planned later in the week include a presentation on a faculty member’s recent book, a discussion on the career of Czech composer Antonín Dvořák, and a home football game vs. Emporia State.

Monday, Oct. 17 

Campus closed.

Tuesday, Oct. 18 

Campus closed.

Volleyball vs. Central Oklahoma: 6 p.m., Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Wednesday, Oct. 19 

“Visions”: Spiva Gallery. The solo exhibition features works by printmaker and traditional Chinese folk-art papercut artist Tammy Harrington and will run through Nov. 3. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday.

Book talk and signing: 2:30 p.m., Quiet Room (213) in Spiva Library. Dr. Megan Bever, , associate professor of history and chair of the Social Science Department, will discuss her new book, “At War with King Alcohol: Debating Drinking and Masculinity in the Civil War”

Thursday, Oct. 20 

“The Career and Importance of Antonín Dvořák”: 1 p.m., Webster Hall’s Corley Auditorium. Dr. Ludmila Kroupová, an assistant professor of music at the University of Hradec Králové will discuss the significance and career of Dvořák, whose work has been the subject of disputes by musicologists influenced by Communist ideology for decades.

Saturday, Oct. 22 

Lion Pride Visit Day: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Billingsly Student Center. Prospective students will have the chance to learn about Missouri Southern, financial aid, and the admissions process, as well as meet with faculty members and take a campus tour.

Football vs. Emporia State: 2 p.m., Fred G. Hughes Stadium.
