The public is advised to take several steps ahead of the winter months

The National Weather Service and other local agencies are promoting Winter Weather Preparedness Week, which runs from Nov. 15-19.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol says that in 2020 there were more than 5,500 vehicle crashes in Missouri that were influenced by ice or snow.

Of those crashes, 1,698 injuries occurred and 26 people were killed.

The public is encouraged to do several things:

Create an emergency plan and kit that includes bottled water, canned foods, battery-powered radio, extra batteries, flashlights, and other emergency items.

Have a separate vehicle emergency kit ready for winter. This should include blankets, jumper cables, shovels, etc.

In times when road conditions are poor, travel as little as possible. Give yourself extra time on the road be wary of the conditions around you.
