City sets public meeting to discuss future of Ewert Pool

What do you see for the future of Ewert Pool and surrounding area?  The City will host a public meeting from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 20 at Ewert Pool to hear from citizens.

Information about the current facility will be discussed along with ideas for other water features or recreational facilities.  The meeting is an open house format, so citizens may come and go as their schedules allow.

This meeting is part of a City study being conducted to review the current facility and look for ideas to best serve our citizens in this area. In conjunction with this meeting, there is a public survey being done. Citizens can complete the survey at the meeting or they can answer the questions online at http://survey.constantcontact.com/survey/a07eh82xjifkd4xksty/start .

Citizens will respond to questions about Joplin pools, recreational preferences, and possible park facilities in the future. Respondents are asked about their recent experiences at the City’s three pools as well as specific questions relating to Ewert Pool and surrounding property. Citizens can note their preferences about other option possibilities for this area and suggestions for the best interests of our citizens and community.

All citizens who have an interest in recreational opportunities in Joplin are encouraged to take the survey.. It will close on Thursday, August 27.

The City hired Waters Edge Aquatic Design from Lenexa, Kansas. as the consultant to help complete the study.

Ewert Pool was first opened in 1925 and was one of five pools in Joplin in the 1940s and 1950s. In 2003 it was renovated into Joplin’s first aquatic center through the passage of the Parks and Stormwater ¼-cent sales tax in 2001. Today the City also offers swimmers two other choices with Cunningham Aquatic Center and Schifferdecker Aquatic Center. Of the three pools, Ewert Pool sees the least number of visitors during a normal season.
