Area Law Enforcement Hosting Drug Take Back Day

Don’t flush those old meds!

Law enforcement agencies across the Four States will be collecting unused medications for safe disposal on Saturday.

It’s a nationwide effort to safely get rid of leftover medication to prevent accidental or intentional misuse. Unused medications are also dangerous for kids, pets and the environment.

Kansas Attorney General Eric Schmidt says “Diversion of opioid painkillers, in particular, contributes to the misuse of these drugs that has become a serious nationwide problem. Getting leftover medicines out of the medicine cabinets and safely destroyed keeps them from falling into the wrong hands and makes our communities safer.”

130 people die every single day in the United States from an opioid overdose.

Medications will be accepted at several drop-off sites across the Four States from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Drug Drop off boxes have been installed in the lobbies of the Galena Police Department and the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office. In addition to those locations, residents can drop off unwanted prescription drugs at Monarch Pharmacy in Baxter Springs.

The Jasper County Sheriff’s Office will be collecting prescription drugs/narcotics in pill or liquid form, no inhalers or needles. They will be  in the parking lot of the Joplin Courthouse located at 6th and Pearl.

The MSSU Police Department will accept unused or unwanted prescription drugs at their station located at 726 N. Mission Hills Drive from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. all week through this Saturday.

In Newton County, you can drop off at the Newton County Sheriff’s Office, Wildcat Glades in Neosho, and the Neosho Police Department.
