Condoleeza Rice to speak at PSU
Pittsburg State University has announced former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as the next speaker in its acclaimed H. Lee Scott Speaker Series: An Examination of American Life.
The series, established in 2015, is designed to bring nationally prominent leaders and innovators to Pittsburg State. The series’ inaugural speaker was President Bill Clinton, followed by former governor and Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney.
Tickets to hear Rice, who will speak on Oct. 3, will go on sale to students at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, April 22, to faculty and staff at 8:30 a.m. on April 26, and to the public at 8:30 a.m. on May 6.
“We’re thrilled to have a speaker as accomplished as Condoleezza Rice accept our invitation,” said PSU President Steve Scott. “Her career has taken her from the collegiate environment to the highest levels of international diplomacy. Secretary Rice continues the H. Lee Scott Series’ proud tradition of bringing the nation’s most distinguished public speakers to campus.”
Rice, who served as Secretary of State from January 2005 to 2009, was the second woman and first African American woman to hold the post. She also served as President George W. Bush’s assistant to the President for National Security Affairs (national security advisor) from January 2001 to 2005 — the first woman to hold the position.
In her address, Rice will give an overview of the current geopolitical landscapes and share her experiences as National Security Advisor and Secretary of State.
Vice President for University Advancement Kathleen Flannery said the university is once again anticipating a high demand for seats.
“Our past series’ speakers have enlightened and challenged our audiences through their lectures,” Flannery said. “We want our students to have the opportunity to experience the same transformational experience, which is why we’re reserving tickets for them at a reduced price. A future Scott Series’ presenter may be among them.”
Student tickets are $10 with a PSU ID and must be purchased at the PSU Ticket Office in the Weede Physical Education Building. Faculty/staff tickets are $15 with a PSU ID and also must be purchased at the Ticket Office.
Tickets for the public are $25 for adults, and $15 for those 65 and older and 17 and younger. Patrons will be limited to six tickets per purchaser.
