Vehicle theft and stolen property arrest in Pittsburg following three incidents

Pittsburg, KAN. – An investigation into three separate incidents in Pittsburg has resulted in the arrest of one man who is now in the Crawford County Jail.

Incident #1
On Friday, January 3, at approximately 12:22 AM, an officer from the Pittsburg Police Department responded to 5th Street Bar & Grill, located at 111 W. 5th Street, in reference to a report of a stolen vehicle.

The owner reported they left their vehicle parked in the rear parking lot with the keys in the center console. The owner reported that when they left the establishment, they found their vehicle was missing and called the police. Video footage of the theft was located and collected to assist in the investigation of the stolen vehicle.

The victim’s vehicle was located earlier in the evening and checked on by police; however, this was prior to the report of the vehicle being stolen. Officers responded to the area where the vehicle was previously observed and recovered it. The owner responded to the location to take possession of their vehicle, during which the owner informed officers that the vehicle was missing around $1,000 worth of tools.

Incident #2
On Friday, January 3, 2025, at approximately 1:18 PM, an officer from the Pittsburg Police Department responded to the parking lot at 2826 N. Broadway in reference to a burglary to a vehicle in progress. The reporting party watched an individual reach into her vehicle through the open window and then leave the area in another vehicle.

The individual checked their vehicle and found their purse was missing from their vehicle. The victim further advised the officer that they noticed one of their debit cards was used at a local gas station. The victim was able to give a description of the suspect vehicle in this incident and the vehicle was later located by officers. The occupants of the vehicle were questioned and released pending further investigation. Video surveillance from the parking lot and gas station was collected to assist in this investigation.

Incident #3
On Tuesday, January 7, 2025, at approximately 11:32 AM an officer from the Pittsburg Police Department responded to the 1900 block of S. Pine in reference to a burglary to a vehicle report. The reporting party advised that their vehicle was burglarized, and items were taken from the vehicle. One of the items stolen from the vehicle was the reporting party’s wallet and contents.

Investigation into these incidents showed that they were related, and the identification of a suspect was developed.

On Wednesday, January 8, 2025, at approximately 10 a.m. , officers from the Pittsburg Police Department executed a search warrant at 208 N. Pine Street, Apartment A. The search warrant was in reference to stolen property related to the previously mentioned cases. Two individuals were located and detained at the residence. The residence was searched and evidence related to these cases was located and seized. While executing the stolen property search warrant, items believed to be illegal narcotics were located. A second search warrant was obtained for the narcotics, and they were seized as well.

As a result of the investigation, 50-year-old Tony V. Corbitt was placed under arrest for felony theft of a motor vehicle, felony burglary to a motor vehicle, two counts of felony theft of property, misdemeanor criminal use of a financial card, and misdemeanor possession of stolen property.

Corbitt was transported to the Crawford County Jail, and he is currently being held without bond. Investigation into the illegal narcotics is ongoing and additional charges may be sought at a later time.

The Pittsburg Police Department would like to remind citizens to remove valuables from your vehicles, to lock your vehicles, and to not leave your keys with your vehicle.

Surveillance cameras played a crucial role in the successful resolution of these cases. The footage obtained from various cameras in and around the area provided officers with invaluable evidence. These recordings not only helped identify the suspect but also assisted in tracking their movements and linking them to the stolen property. The images captured on these systems were instrumental in advancing the investigation, ultimately leading to the recovery of the stolen items and the arrest of Corbitt.

Corbitt is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
