One killed, six injured, one seriously in SE Kansas accident

A crash in southeast Kansas Saturday afternoon took the life of a man from Columbus and injured several others, one seriously.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says the accident took place a little before 4 p.m. at SE Greenlawn and SE 20th street.

The patrol says a 2018 Ford Explorer driven by 35-year-old Maryann Atkinson of Columbus traveling  west on SE Greenlawn Road failed to stop and was hit by a 1996 Ford Van driven by 37-year-old Charla King traveling northbound on SE 20th Street.

36-year-old Matthew Atkinson of Columbus, Kan., a passenger in the Explorer, was pronounced dead at the scene.

35-year-old Maryann Atkins of Columbus, the driver of the explorer suffered serious injuries. She was taken to Freeman West Hospital in Joplin.

37-year-old Charla King of Columbus, the driver of the Ford Van, suffered minor injuries. Three female juveniles and one male juvenile in the Van also had minor injuries.
