Amendment 7 on Missouri election ballot: Ranked choice voting ban, barring non-citizens from voting

Missouri voters will decide in November whether to ban ranked choice voting and non-citizens from voting.

Ranked choice voting lets voters rank candidates by preference, instead of choosing one winner. Candidates must receive the majority of the votes — 50 percent, plus 1 or better — to win and to avoid a runoff election.

Amendment 7 would bar Missouri from adopting ranked-choice voting and would declare the highest vote getter as the winner of an election – even if the winner gets less than 50 percent.

As for citizenship, the Missouri constitution says that “all citizens” who meet requirements can vote.

Amendment Seven changes the language to “only citizens” can vote.

The amendment was approved by the Missouri House and Senate earlier this year but needs to be passed by voters on November 5th for final approval.
