Driving and boating safety on Labor Day Weekend

A busy holiday travel experience is expected this weekend.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Corporal Sam Carpenter told Newstalk KZRG what can cause crashes:

“The speed is a big one, you’re the one responsible for how fast your car goes. Following too closely is another big one, and especially when the weather, now that we’re going to start entering fall, we’re going to have a lot of motorcycles out there as well. Don’t just look once, look twice, look three times before you pull out into the roadway.”

The Highway Patrol is also responsible for boating safety on lakes.  According to Corporal Carpenter:

“We just need people to be courteous boaters.  Realize you’re not the only person on the water. You’re not the only boat on the lake. Be mindful of the wake that your boat’s throwing because it does a lot of damage to our shorelines and boat docks and smaller watercraft can’t handle that.

What effect does drinking have while driving a boat?

Corporal Carpenter told Newstalk KZRG:

“The water, the Sun, the wind, the wave action on the water. They exacerbate the effects of alcohol on you. People don’t really think that it does. It makes it a lot worse, has a lot more effect on it.”

Remember don’t drink and drive on land or water.
