Kansas Lawmakers Looking To Reduce Safety Drills At School
Remember those safety drills you practiced in school? Lining up in the hallway for a tornado drill, or going outside for a fire drill? Kids nowadays also have to practice what to do in the event of a crisis, like an active shooter, but some teachers, and Kansas lawmakers are saying it’s all just too much, and a huge disruption to the day.
Kansas schools are required to hold at least 16 drills per school year, nine of which have to be dedicated to crisis drills- that means a drill every two weeks. This is the first year that schools were mandated to hold crisis drills, but a bill put forward by the Senate wants to see the numbers of drills reduced to just 9 drills each year, specifically to four fire, three crisis, and two tornado drills.
The Senate approved Senate Bill 128 last month, sending it to the House. The House will hear the bill on Monday.
