A look at Veterans Day events throughout the community
Veterans Day is this Saturday, November 11th. While some families will be celebrating with BBQs, others will be at various Veterans Day celebration events.
Joplin, Missouri Veterans Day Parade- American Legion Post 13 is hosting Joplin’s 36th annual Veterans Day Parade on Saturday, November 11th.The parade is featuring marching bands, vintage cars, service vehicles, flag and drill teams, and veterans. The Grand Marshalls for this year’s parade are Korean War Veteran Ralph Green and Vietnam War Veteran Todd Thompson, both served in the United States Navy.
The parade begins at 10 a.m. at 15th Street & Main and moves north to 3rd Street, turning west, and continuing onto Joplin Avenue, heading south to the City Hall parking lots between 5th and 7th Streets.
Travelers are encouraged to be extra cautious during this event. If needing to cross Main Street, drivers should plan spare travel time to reach the far south or north end of the roads.
Galena, Kansas Veterans Day Parade- A parade is also being hosted in Galena, Kansas on November 11th sponsored by the Galena museum and the Galena Route 66 Lions Club. Following the parade, veterans will visit with the public and share their experiences. The parade line up is at 11th and Main in Galena, Kansas.
Pittsburg, Kansas Veterans Day Parade- On Friday, November 10th, Pittsburg State University is hosting their annual Veterans Day Memorial ceremony. This year PSU is bringing in Lt. Col. Jeremiah Hull as their keynote speaker. Lt. Col. Hull is a 2001 graduate of Pitt State and a bronze star recipient. He will be promoted to full Colonel on November 11th during halftime of the Gorilla football game at Carnie Smith Stadium. Pavers will be dedicated at the ceremony and patriotic music will be heard.
