The Great Race comes to Joplin!
Main Street will be closed starting at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 28, from 1st Street to 7th Street as Joplin prepares to welcome The Great Race event to our community. East/west traffic along 4th Street will remain open until 1 p.m. East/west traffic on 2nd and 7th Streets will continue throughout the day. Main Street is anticipated to open at 10 p.m. Wednesday.
During this event, 120 road-worthy antique and classic automobiles will line the 300 to 500 block of Main Street starting at 4:45 p.m. Only cars built in 1974 and earlier can participate. Joplin is hosting the end and overnight stay as day five of the nine-day event concludes.
In all, the Great Race covers more than 2,300 miles. It starts in St. Augustine, Florida, on June 24 and the race will be completed on July 2 in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
A new feature has popped up for this event – Joplin’s Main Street will also have Mini Coopers lined up in the 100 and 200 blocks for car enthusiasts to enjoy.
Everyone is invited to come downtown Wednesday evening and enjoy the classic cars driving the race route!
Drivers should use streets east or west of Main Street during this closure and remain cautious as they near the detours. The City appreciates your patience.
