Jury selection begins in fatal drunken driving trial

Jury selection began today in the trial of a man accused of fatally injuring a retired MSSU professor in a drunken driving crash.

Kenton Cowgill smashed into two vehicles on July 3, 2021, including one driven by 66-year-old retired MSSU professor Dr. Robert McDermid at 7th and Duquesne in Joplin.

McDermid died in the crash.

Earlier that morning, Cowgill earlier had been reported passed out in his car on South Rex Avenue but attempted to flee after police arrived.

Cowgill is charged with second-degree murder, driving while intoxicated resulting in death, resisting arrest, and second-degree trafficking in drugs.

Cowgill was reportedly offered a plea deal late last week but turned it down.

The trial, when it begins, is expected to last three days.
