Early Morning Car Chase Ends With Spike Strips

It all started just after 3 this morning, when a JPD officer saw suspicious behavior in the 500 block of Moffett. In the extreme cold and darkness of the night there was a man standing next to a parked car in an ally with the trunk open. When the officer attempted find out what was happening, the car took off.

Over the course of the next hour, the car led police from multiple agencies in a chase. from North Joplin, into Kansas where the Cherokee County Sheriff’s office and the Galena Police department both attempted to spike the car. While in Galena, tried to “cut-off” the pursing police.

The pursuit continued past Downstream and onto I-44 west and into Miami, then back east on Highway 10 where the Newton County Sherrif’s office deputies were successfully able to deploy spike strips when the fleeing suspects made their way onto 43 Highway heading North.

The car kept going north on 43 and as it went over I-44 spike strips put down by Newton County were successful a second time.

The car kept going, but not for long. At the bottom of the hill, at Shoal Creek, the car finally came to rest and the suspects 36-year-old Joseph Hood and 32-year-old Nicole Teague (both of Joplin) were taken into custody.

Hood had 7 Jasper County felony warrants for possession, creation and distribution of a controlled substance and a weapons violation warrant out of Newton County. Teague had 2 forgery warrants, trafficking id’s warrant and a passing bad checks warrant all out of Jasper County. Hood was also charged with possession of drug paraphernalia, Felony resisting by fleeing and possession of burglar tools.

At the conclusion of this dangerous attempt to avoid police, the car they were in was discovered to be stolen as well. Hood now also faces charges of first degree tampering with a motor vehicle and Teague faces second degree tampering charges.

The vehicle that attempted to cut off the pursuit was caught by Kansas Authorities and they were arrested as well.
