MSSU to host solo exhibition “Wake”

The MSSU Spiva Gallery will host a solo exhibition by artist Jamie Bates Slone titled, “Wake.” This show will run from January 23- February 22, 2023, with an artist talk on Thursday, February 9 at 6:00 pm on the MSSU Campus in Corley Auditorium. A reception to view the work will follow the talk in the gallery at 7:00 pm.

In an MSSU press release they describe Bates’s art as, “a cerebral exploration of her identity and mental state. She sculpts the body in all its operations, using scale, vignette, and surface to encourage viewers to confront their psyche and presumptions. By addressing subjects like mental health, sexuality, and gender, Jamie creates work that resonates universally while simultaneously reflecting her unique experiences.”

They go on to note, “Jamie creates artwork that explores the complexities of the human condition through her own lens to reveal the more ‘private’ aspects of their own identity. Ultimately, their work aims to promote healthy exploration of both the body and mind. Jamie’s work is a cathartic self-portrait that is ever-changing as they physically and mentally evolve.”

An Assistant Professor of Art, Bates Slone teaches ceramic and figurative sculpture at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma. She is the recipient of many awards and grants, including the Junior Faculty Fellowship from the Vice President for Research and Partnerships at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma, and the Windgate Summer Scholarship from the Archie Bray Foundation for the Ceramic Arts.

Jamie was also named one of Ceramic Monthly’s 2018 Emerging Artists. Jamie has participated in many national residencies, including Studio 740 and the Archie Bray Foundation in Montana, Belger Crane Yard Studios in Kansas City, Missouri, and Watershed Center for the Ceramic Arts in Newcastle, Maine. She was also the headlining artist for the 2022 Silver City Clay Festival. As the headliner, she performed a one-week workshop, lectured, exhibited a solo exhibition of her work, and juried a corresponding exhibition.
