Trey Lance Named 49ers Starter
The 49ers have ran with Jimmy Garoppolo under center for the last five years. In that time, Garoppolo has a record of 31-14. He has been deemed as the thing that is holding the 49ers back. Jimmy G had a solid year last year throwing for 3,810 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. These are not bad numbers in the run-heavy 49ers scheme. It apparently is not enough to have him remain in the starting role. Garoppolo will not be participating in team practices or in the preseason games to prevent any injuries. A healthy Jimmy G could hold solid trade value nearing the start of the season.
Trey Lance, your new sheriff in town, was the 49ers 2021 number three overall draft pick. The 49ers traded 2022 and 2023 first round picks to select Lance. Lance was a highly touted prospect coming out of North Dakota State. Lance was selected well before other quarterbacks Justin Fields, Mac Jones, and Davis Mills. Lance has appeared in six games, starting in two of them. He is 1-1 one in his two career starts, throwing for 603 yards, 5 touchdowns, and two interceptions.
Sitting Lance for his rookie season, may have helped him develop and get up to speed with the flow of the NFL. We will get our first looks at Lance throughout training camp and the preseason. Lance seemingly will finally get to prove if he was worth the two first-round picks and if he can lead the 49ers back to the Super Bowl.
