On Wednesday, January 2, 2019, at approximately 4:25 p.m., Officers from the Pittsburg Police Department, along with Pittsburg Fire Department and Crawford County EMS were called near the intersection of Park and Elm Streets in Pittsburg in reference to a two-vehicle injury accident.
The initial investigation revealed that a 1998 GMC SUV was traveling south on Elm Street and was slowing to make a right turn onto Ramsey Street. A 2000 Chevrolet S-10 pickup truck, which was also southbound on Elm Street, attempted to pass the turning vehicle on the right side of the roadway after the driver of the pickup truck apparently failed to notice the SUV turning and attempted to avoid striking the SUV. As the pickup truck passed the SUV on the right, the pickup truck collided with the SUV, which then caused the pickup truck to strike a tree broadside on the passenger side of the pickup truck, before spinning back out onto Elm Street where the vehicle came to rest.
A passenger in the pickup truck was injured in the crash and was transported from the scene by Crawford County EMS to Via Christi Hospital. The victim was later transferred to KU Medical Center in Kansas City via helicopter for further treatment; however, the passenger later died as a result of the injuries. Neither the driver of the pickup truck nor the driver of the SUV were injured. The investigation into the accident is continuing and the names of those involved are being withheld pending notification of family.
