Carterville to hold groundbreaking for new well on Wednesday

It has been just over a year since Carterville suffered a failure with the city’s only municipal well.

In February 2021, the city’s well pump, installed in 1993, was damaged beyond repair and was replaced with a new submersible pump drawing from a deeper source of drinking water. This was performed at no cost to citizens through community development grants and insurance.

Now, an all-new well will be created.  The groundbreaking event is planned for 4 p.m. on Wednesday March 23 at the site of the new well located at 1st and Walnut.

The new well will be drilled by Harper Drilling of Clinton Missouri with plans supplied by Anderson Engineering.

More than 1,900 residents in Carterville and the surrounding areas look to benefit from this new well, which will improve pressure and serve as a backup for the existing municipal well.

Over the past year, the city has been working on additional upgrades to the drinking water system using existing, voter approved bonds from 2009 to finance these upgrades. Plans also include a leak detection programs, GIS line inventories, targeted line replacements, and, ultimately, a second water tower.
