Springfield City Utility smokestacks to be imploded tomorrow morning
Viewing area to open at 7 a.m.
If you’re in the mood to see a spectacle, just down I-44 in Springfield is the place to be tomorrow morning. The iconic smokestacks at the James River Power station are set to be imploded at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
Station KY3 reports that a viewing area will be set up at the Kissick and Evans Roads intersections. That area will open at 7 a.m. and close at 8:30 a.m. or when it is at capacity.
The smokestacks have served Springfield since 1957 but are no longer needed.
Those in the general vicinity can take photos but use of drones by the general public is prohibited.
The the event also can be viewed on the Facebook page for City Utilities.
The demolition project, expected to be completed by early April, removes only external components of the decommissioned station. The building, substation, and several other components, remain in service to the community.
