Sheriff: Man charged in 1993 killing in Arnold has died

HILLSBORO, Mo. (AP) – Authorities say a 69-year-old man charged last year with a 1993 killing in the St. Louis area has died.

Jefferson County Sheriff Dave Marshak said Friday that Loril Harp died after spending several weeks in a hospital.

Harp was arrested in September 2020 and charged with the death of 40-year-old Steven Weltig, a liquor store owner in Arnold.

Investigators say Harp told them in September that he went to Weltig’s store to confront him over a shooting in which Harp believed Weltig was the shooter.

Harp had been charged with first-degree murder and armed criminal action.
