Neosho Arts Council to hold presentation to honor creator of “Centennial Mural”

The event will be held on June 26

The Neosho Arts Council will host guest lecturer Daniel Morrison in Neosho on June 26 for a special presentation on artist Duard Marshall, creator of the “Centennial Mural.”

The event will be held at 1 PM inside the Neosho/Newton County Library Community Room.

“Morrison will cover Marshall’s life starting from his youth living on an apple farm in Arkansas through his career in Denver, Fort Worth, and Kansas City. He’ll give a look into Marshall’s art career from his studies with Neosho native Thomas Hart Benton during the Regionalist Movements heyday through his struggles to find his creative voice after the movements collapse,” according to a news release from the Neosho Arts Council.

The “Centennial Mural”, which was painted in 1939, is in the Neosho/Newton County Library.

Over the piece’s 82-year history, it’s incurred damage from cigarette smoke, water staining, warping, and a piece being cut out.

A fundraiser is in progress to restore the painting, which is set at $40,000.
