Cyclist safety bill glides through Oklahoma House

OKLAHOMA CITY – A bill aimed at improving road safety for motorists and bicyclists has rolled out of the House  with a vote of 76-13.

It acts on a request from the Indian Nations Council of Governments and various bicyclist enthusiast groups. It allows people on bicycles to treat stop signs as yield signs and red lights as stop signs.

The bill updates hand signals so a biker can lawfully use a right hand to signal.

It also bars vehicles from honking at people on bikes when there is no imminent danger.

Rep. Mike Dobrinski, the bill’s sponsor, said it is designed to make Oklahoma more biker-friendly and attract more bicycling organizations and enthusiasts.
