The MIAA is preparing for a possible shakeup in college athletics, and Missouri Southern State University will have a seat at the table.

MSSU athletic director Rob Mallory has been appointed to a new 10-member MIAA Governance and Enforcement Task Force, which will examine the potential impact of the federal Protect College Sports Act.

The proposed legislation, co-sponsored by Missouri U.S. Senator Eric Schmitt, could reshape how D1 and D2 colleges handle athlete transfers, name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals, eligibility, and enforcement.

The bill passed the Senate 77-22 in September and is awaiting action in the House.

Schmitt also helped develop a provision allowing colleges to pool their media rights to generate additional revenue.

The task force will prepare for either outcome: Congress passing the legislation or the bill failing and conferences needing to address certain issues themselves.

MIAA Commissioner Mike Racy says Division II athletics is at a pivotal moment.

The conference wants to determine which rules should be governed nationally and which should remain under conference control.
