A Joplin-area state senator is celebrating a new role in the next legislative session in Jefferson City!

Jill Carter, of Granby, has been named assistant majority floor leader of the Missouri Senate.

Carter confirmed the appointment in a Facebook post, thanking her Republican colleagues for their confidence.

"Most of all, thank you to the people of Senate District 32. This role gives Southwest Missouri a stronger voice in Jefferson City, and I'll use it to keep your priorities at the front of the line," she said.

This is a change from her previous position as majority caucus whip.

Things will look a bit different when the session starts January 7th.

Republicans lost their long-held supermajorities in both the Missouri House and Senate after Democrats flipped 16 House seats and two Senate seats in Tuesday's election.

Republicans still control both chambers, but they'll now need Democratic support to override the governor's vetoes or fast-track most legislation through emergency clauses.
