Joplin's $5.3m Main Street makeover begins Tuesday
What do you think?
Drivers along Main Street in Joplin should prepare for traffic disruptions beginning Tuesday, November 3, as construction gets underway on a $5.3 million streetscaping project.
The first phase will focus on Main Street between 12th and 15th streets, beginning on the east side of the roadway.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction, with vehicles shifted to the west side using signs and traffic-control devices.
The improvements are part of a larger effort to beautify Joplin's Midtown district, eventually transforming Main Street between Eighth and 15th streets.
The project is expected to take nine months to complete.
Half of the $5.3 million cost will be covered by a federal Community Project Funding grant administered through the Department of Housing and Urban Development.
The remaining funding comes from Joplin's transportation sales tax.
City officials say additional traffic changes and lane closures will be announced as construction progresses.
