13-year prison sentence for Sarcoxie man after shooting last year

A Sarcoxie man has been sentenced to 13 years in prison for shooting an another man last year.

31-year-old Cory Franklin entered an Alford plea to first-degree assault.

Under the plea, Franklin did not admit guilt but acknowledged prosecutors had enough evidence to likely convict him at trial.

The case stems from an October 2025 shooting on Miner Street in Sarcoxie.

Jasper County deputies said a 49-year-old Carthage man was shot in the back of his left arm, with the bullet traveling into his back.

Investigators said witnesses reported there was no physical altercation before the shooting.

Franklin later admitted to investigators that he fired one shot.

The victim was hospitalized and was reported in stable condition following the shooting.
