Burlison worries about radical Islam, breaks with Trump on $5k dividend

Southwest Missouri Congressman Eric Burlison says the threat of radical Islam remains one of his biggest national security concerns 25 years after the September 11 terrorist attacks.
Speaking Friday on Newstalk KZRG, Burlison said Americans have a responsibility to teach future generations why the country was attacked and warned about what he described as the growing influence of Islamist ideology in some U.S. communities.
“The spread of Islam, particularly the radical Islam, is what keeps me up,” Burlison said.
Burlison is a member of the Sharia-Free America Caucus, a congressional group formed to oppose efforts its members believe could bring principles of Islamic law into American government.
During the interview, Burlison also claimed some communities could eventually develop into “Muslim-only” or “Sharia-only” areas.
On a different topic, Burlison expressed skepticism about President Donald Trump’s newly proposed $5,000 “Trump dividend.”
Trump has said every adult American citizen would receive $5,000 if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress after the November midterms.
Estimates put the potential cost at roughly $1.2 trillion to $1.35 trillion.
Burlison said the nation’s more than $40 trillion debt makes him cautious about the proposal and criticized the possibility of means-testing the payments.
“That is by definition socialism,” Burlison said of government taxing and redistributing money.
