Quapaw Nation adds safeguards as investigation continues into bison deaths
What do you think?
The Quapaw Nation says it is adding new safeguards and oversight to its bison program as an investigation continues into the recent loss of animals from the tribe’s herd.
In an updated statement, the Nation said it is working with local, state and federal officials, along with independent professionals, veterinarians, agricultural experts and other specialists to determine what happened.
The Nation has not publicly identified a cause or provided a final accounting of the bison that died.
Tribal officials said the investigation is being driven by documentation, professional analysis and verified information rather than speculation.
“While the investigation continues, the Quapaw Nation is not waiting to act,” the statement said.
The Nation said it has already begun incorporating additional safeguards, training, oversight and management practices intended to strengthen the bison program.
Officials said further changes could be made if the investigation identifies additional problems.
Their statement also cautioned against rumors and unverified claims, saying speculation could interfere with the investigation and make it more difficult to establish the facts.
The Nation said the bison have significant cultural and historical importance and described their care as a serious responsibility
