Joplin police warn of costly scams sweeping the area

Joplin police are warning you about several crime trends hitting the area, including Bitcoin scams, fake rental listings and an increase in stolen Kia vehicles.
Detective Ryan Bolt told Newstalk KZRG that police have seen an uptick in scams in which victims are directed to deposit large amounts of money into Bitcoin ATMs.
Fake rental listings are also appearing on Facebook Marketplace, with scammers collecting money through gift cards, Venmo or other payment methods for homes that are not actually available.
Police are also seeing forged-check schemes in which victims are asked to cash a check, purchase gift cards and send the money back to the scammer.
Chief Richard Pearson said legitimate law enforcement agencies will not demand payment through gift cards, Bitcoin or other unusual payment methods.
He urged anyone receiving a suspicious call involving an arrest, missed court date or jury duty to contact police before sending money.
Time can be critical after money is lost. Pearson said police may have a brief window — potentially about 72 hours in some international Bitcoin transactions — to attempt to stop or recover funds.
Police are also reporting an increase in Kia thefts and continue to deal with property crimes.
Officers asks that you record serial numbers on valuable property, lock vehicles and avoid leaving firearms or other valuables inside cars overnight.
