Dangerous heat will remain the main weather story in Joplin through midweek before thunderstorms bring a break in temperatures.

An Extreme Heat Warning remains in effect through 8 p.m. Monday, with heat index values expected to reach 105 to 110 degrees.

Highs are expected to stay near or above 100 degrees Monday through Wednesday, and the National Weather Service says additional heat alerts may be needed.

The pattern changes late Wednesday as a cold front approaches southwest Missouri, bringing a better chance for showers and thunderstorms Wednesday night into Thursday.

The Weather Prediction Center is also highlighting parts of Missouri for possible heavy rain during that period, though it remains too early to know exactly where the heaviest rain will fall.

Temperatures are expected to drop into the upper 80s or lower 90s Thursday, offering the first real break from the heat.

Scattered rain could linger into Friday before warmer weather returns for the weekend.
