Extreme heat warning grips the area through Labor Day
What do you think?
Dangerous heat will continue across southwest Missouri through the weekend, with a Heat Warning in effect through the holiday weekend.
The National Weather Service says afternoon temperatures will climb into the upper 90s, while high humidity will make it feel even hotter. Overnight temperatures will remain warm, offering little relief.
Joplin is expected to remain in the Weather Service’s highest HeatRisk category through the weekend, meaning the heat could become dangerous for anyone without adequate cooling or hydration.
Forecasters are also watching wet bulb globe temperature, or WBGT, which measures how heat, humidity, wind and direct sunlight combine to affect the body.
The Weather Service says WBGT levels across the area will reach the high to extreme range at times, increasing the risk for people working, exercising or spending long periods outdoors.
Under high WBGT conditions, the Weather Service recommends frequent breaks for people doing strenuous activity in direct sunlight.
Saturday and Sunday are expected to be the hottest days, with dangerous heat continuing across much of the region.
The Weather Service is also watching the possibility that the extreme heat could continue deeper into September, along with worsening drought conditions.
