No quick relief: Joplin heat threat could stretch into mid-September

A dangerous stretch of extreme heat is expected to push heat index values as high as 107 degrees across the Joplin metro area, with unusually hot conditions potentially lasting well beyond the workweek.

The National Weather Service issued a heat advisory from noon to 8 p.m. Monday, followed by an extreme heat watch during the same hours Tuesday through Friday.

Joplin’s forecast heat index climbs from 103 degrees Monday to 106 Tuesday, then 107 each day Wednesday through Friday.

Overnight temperatures will only fall into the mid- to upper 70s, offering little relief.

Looking farther ahead, forecasters said extreme heat could continue into the Sept. 7-10 period.
