A Joplin woman is accused of leaving her child in a hot car Tuesday.

Jazlan Ashae’ Frencher is facing a felony charge after police say her 7-year-old son was found lethargic and struggling to respond inside a hot vehicle during an extreme heat warning.

According to a probable cause statement, Frencher left the boy alone inside a non-running vehicle in the Walmart Neighborhood parking lot on South Maiden Lane for approximately 20 minutes Tuesday evening.

A witness called dispatch around 6:39 p.m. after finding the child with shallow breathing and unable to respond.

Police said an officer reached through a partially opened window, unlocked the vehicle and removed the boy around 6:42 p.m.

The witness told police the child appeared lethargic but became responsive after being given water.

Police said the outside temperature was approximately 96 degrees and an extreme heat warning was in effect.

The National Weather Service’s hot-car temperature chart estimates that when it is 95°F outside, a vehicle can reach approximately 114°F after 10 minutes and 124°F after 20 minutes.

Frencher came out of the store around 6:55 p.m. and was arrested.

She was taken to the Joplin City Jail.
