Cherokee County, Kansas, prosecutors are recommending probation time as part of a plea agreement with a man originally charged with attempted child sex crimes.

32-year-old Derek McKenney, of Sarcoxie, Missouri, has agreed to plead guilty to attempted commercial sexual exploitation of a child and attempted aggravated endangering of a child.

McKenney was originally charged with attempted aggravated human trafficking, electronic solicitation and attempted commercial sexual exploitation of a child.

He was bound over for trial in June.

Under the deal, the human trafficking and electronic solicitation charges will be dismissed with prejudice.

McKenney is not guaranteed to avoid prison. The agreement lists a sentencing range of 17 to 46 months, and the judge is not bound by prosecutors' recommendation.

He was arrested in February during a multi-agency operation targeting people suspected of soliciting minors for sex.
