Drivers in Joplin should prepare for traffic delays on Maiden Lane starting Wednesday as a major resurfacing project gets underway.

Milling and overlaying the roadway will be starting at Perkins Street and North Maiden Lane before working south to the city's southern limits, extending beyond 32nd Street.

This process removes the top layer of worn asphalt and replaces it with a new driving surface, extending the life of the roadway and improving ride quality.

Maiden Lane will remain open throughout construction, but motorists should expect ongoing lane closures and are encouraged to use alternate routes whenever possible to avoid delays.

Once work on Maiden Lane is complete, crews will move to Lone Elm Road to perform similar resurfacing work.

Lone Elm Road will remain open but will be reduced to a single lane with flaggers directing traffic.

City officials also recommend drivers seek alternate routes during that phase of the project.
