Drivers in west Joplin will need to plan for a major traffic change starting Monday, July 6.

The intersection of West 20th Street and Central City Road will close to through traffic as crews begin building a new roundabout.

City officials expect the closure to last about two months.

Residents will still be able to access their homes during construction, but through traffic will be detoured. Soft closures will be set up at Malang Road to the west, 32nd Street to the south, Junge Boulevard to the north and Country Club/Black Cat Road to the east.

Drivers are encouraged to use 32nd Street, Malang Road, West Junge Boulevard and Schifferdecker Avenue as alternate routes.

Anyone needing to reach West 20th Street between Central City Road and Country Club Drive will have to enter from the east using Country Club Drive.

The roundabout is part of a larger $9.8 million improvement project that will widen nearly two miles of West 20th Street from Schifferdecker Avenue to Central City Road. The project will expand the roadway from two lanes to three, improve intersections at Country Club Drive and Central City Road, install new curbs and gutters, and add a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists along the corridor.

Emery Sapp & Sons is serving as the project’s contractor.

The work is funded through Joplin’s Capital Improvement Sales Tax, which voters first approved in 2014 and renewed in 2024, along with contributions from the City of Joplin, Jasper County, the American Rescue Plan Act and the Joplin Special Road District.
