Ottawa County inmate found unresponsive; later pronounced dead

An investigation is underway after an inmate was found unresponsive on in his jail cell in Ottawa County, Oklahoma.

An investigation is underway after an inmate was found unresponsive on in his jail cell in Ottawa County, Oklahoma.

District Attorney Douglas Pewitt, says a jail staffer saw Wesley Dainty asleep in his bed during a routine hourly check at 6 a.m.

An hour later, Pewitt says jail staff found him unresponsive.

Jail staff immediately began resuscitation. Authorities took Dainty to a local hospital for treatment, where he later died.

District Attorney Douglas Pewitt says the death is being investigated as a possible suicide.

The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office requested the Oklahoma Bureau of Investigation to continue the investigation. OSBI agents are currently on the scene.

An OSBI spokesperson said any findings are pending the medical examiner's report. At this time, the death is not believed to be suspicious.

The inmate’s death was turned over to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, and his body was taken to the Tulsa Medical Examiner for an official cause of death

The investigation is ongoing.
