Wet weather and rising temperatures bring unwanted pests inside

With the wet weather upon us and the temperatures on the rise, now is the time for you to be alert and on the lookout for any unwanted foot traffic in your home.
What kind of traffic? The kind that’s unwanted and usually crawls on four, six or eight legs—pests.
“Right now, they’re moving from the outside in,” Bug-A-Way Pest Control owner Rorie Hansen said. “Especially things like with weather changes and whatnot, we see a lot of ants. They’re like little barometers. So, anytime a storm’s coming or rain’s coming or something like that, they are moving in, trying to get out of the weather, find a safe harbor.
Other pests you come in contact with include cockroaches, bed bugs, carpenter ants and termites—one pest you specifically want to keep an eye out for.
“With the weather changing and the temperatures rising, the ground temperature gets just right and a lot of times people will see winged insects,” Hansen said. “Sometimes it’s flies or sometimes it’s other types of insects, but the ones they really need to watch out for is when there’s just hundreds and hundreds of silky-winged, almost ant-looking insects inside the house. That’s a significant sign that you’ve got a termite swarm. You just want to get that checked out.”
With the weather getting warmer by the day, getting time in the backyard is increasing. While outback, it is wise to pay attention for any possible investigations around your home—notably spiders and ticks. Whether it’s the black widow or the brown recluse spider, or the lone star, American dog or deer tick, your yard can harbor several unwanted pests.
“It’s always a concern for me, and the reason being is I have three small little kids and they’re playing in the yard all the time,” Hansen said. “So, my home gets treated, my perimeter gets treated, my yard gets treated. You know, I just want to be as safe as possible with my own kids.”
Of course, there is one pest you don’t want to forget about when treating your yard or having it treated professionally. The hater of summer-time fun, the dreaded mosquito.
While there are plenty of measures you can take on your own to prevent an infestation, there are certainly pros to having a professional take a look.
“The last thing you want is having things going on in your yard and at the outside parts of your yard with your animals or your kids out there playing and as soon as they come in, they’re bringing it all back in with them,” Hansen said. “Then you have an infestation inside the house and that’s what you don’t want to do. The more preventative things you can do, the better.”
