Register your home storm shelter so first responders can find you in an emergency

If you live in the Joplin area and have a home storm shelter, either above or below ground, you need to get it registered with your police or fire department.

Dustin Lunow with the Joplin Fire Department tells Newstalk KZRG:

“If you have a shelter at your home, whether it’s the city of Joplin or not, maybe if you live in a different fire district around, contact them to see if they have records. A lot of them do.  And that’s not so we can know everything that’s going on. That’s for us to build a database in which if there is an event we will know where to go looking for, you know, in ground or above ground shelters where we may find people that maybe are trapped or displaced or can’t extricate themselves out. We can know where to go and look and help us come and get you quicker. And that’s the whole purpose of the storm registration within the city of Joplin.  I would strongly recommend people doing that.”
