Joplin to celebrate upcoming birthday at Monday Council meeting
The Joplin Celebration Commission continues its work through 2026, planning for Route 66 Centennial and USA 250; the group has announced two events for the City of Joplin’s 152nd birthday.
Though the birthday is on March 23, the milestone will be highlighted during the Joplin City Council meeting on Monday, March 17.
Taking advantage of the day being St. Patrick’s Day, three members of the Celebrations Commission will make a special presentation at the start of the City Council meeting. The presentation will focus on founding fathers with Irish heritage, city birthdays past and present, and the recognition of Joplin City Hall, which has occupied the historic Newman Building for twenty years.

- Brad Belk – The significance of remembering Joplin’s founding
- Patrick Tuttle – Joplin City Hall, 2002 to 2025
The council meeting begins at 6:00 p.m., in the Council Chambers, 5th floor of City Hall.
Also, on March 17, at 1:30 p.m., the Celebration Commission will unveil two new additions to its legacy project, The Heritage Trail.
The new storyboards tell the history of John C. Cox, Joplin’s first homestead, and The Unrest, days of tension between mining camps.
These are the 8th and 9th Heritage Trail markers to be placed. The initial markers along the trail between Landreth Park and the Broadway Bridge were dedicated in 2022, and three more were added last year in Spiva Park.
The unveiling will occur at the end of the driveway to the Cox Family Estate at 619 E. Persimmon. The public is invited.
