Neosho Police Department warns of Internet Billing Scam

The Neosho Police Department is spreading the word about a new internet billing scam targeting residents. The Department said in a news release:

“On March 10, 2025, officers were informed that a suspect contacted a victim by phone, posing as a bill collector from Liberty Utilities. The suspect provided the victim with two barcodes and instructed the victim to make a payment at Wal-Mart for processing.

“Wal-Mart does accept barcode payments as a legitimate method of payment. The victim later contacted Liberty Utilities to confirm the payment had been received. It was at that time the victim discovered the payment had not been processed by Liberty Utilities and that they had fallen victim to fraud.

“The Neosho Police Department urges all citizens to exercise caution when making payments over the phone or online. If you receive a call requesting payment for a bill, always contact the company directly using a verified phone number to confirm the legitimacy of the request before proceeding with any transaction. Taking this step can help prevent financial loss and protect against evolving scam tactics.

“If you believe you have been targeted by a scam or have any information related to this type of fraud, please contact the Neosho Police Department immediately at 417-451-8012.”
