Joplin crews prepped for snow and ice across 250 lane miles

JOPLIN, Mo. —  As the upcoming winter storm approaches the region, Joplin city crews are prepped to plow and treat nearly 250 lane miles of streets to ensure safe travel for residents.

The Public Works Department, responsible for snow and ice control, carefully monitors weather conditions to schedule crews in advance and provide the best possible response during and after winter storms.

Following the city’s established Snow Plan, plows operate on a designated route system, ensuring primary and secondary roads, along with bridges, receive top priority when snow or ice begins to accumulate. The only exception occurs when emergency responders require assistance. Residential and private streets, however, are not included in the city’s snow-clearing efforts.

PRIORITZING SAFETY ON JOPLIN’S ROADS

The city’s snow control strategy is designed to maximize mobility and safety for properly equipped vehicles. While streets are plowed curb to curb when possible, full bare pavement is not guaranteed due to various weather conditions. Instead, treated roads aim to provide a safe driving surface despite potential snowpack or wind rows left behind after plowing.

Joplin’s road treatment process involves a specialized salt-and-beet juice mixture, which helps manage ice and snow buildup. However, this solution only activates at temperatures above 15 degrees Fahrenheit. If temperatures drop lower or if rain or high winds are expected, pretreatment becomes ineffective and is not applied.

PRIVATE POPERTY RESPONSIBILITIES

Property owners remain responsible for clearing their own driveways, private streets, and sidewalks. The city advises residents to shovel snow to the side of their driveway to reduce the amount of buildup left by plows at entrances. Sidewalks are also expected to be maintained by adjacent property or business owners to ensure safe pedestrian passage.

With city crews working diligently throughout the winter season, Joplin officials urge drivers to exercise caution and patience while navigating snow-covered streets. By adhering to the city’s Snow Plan and prioritizing public safety, the Public Works Department remains committed to keeping Joplin’s roadways as clear and passable as possible during winter storms.
