Daytime closures along West 20th start Monday as Liberty relocates power poles to prepare for widening project

(City of Joplin) — In preparation for the City’s widening project of West 20th Street, Liberty Utilities will start relocating power poles along this corridor on Monday, February 3. Work will be done in sections along West 20th Street, starting with the area from Schifferdecker Avenue to Iron Gates Road. During their work, this section of 20th Street will be closed to through traffic during daytime hours.
After completing this first section, Liberty will work from Iron Gates Road to Black Cat Road and then move to the area of Black Cat Road to Central City Road. Depending on weather conditions, this relocation effort could take approximately four to six weeks.
Residents will have access to their homes, and businesses will remain accessible throughout this period.
This project will widen West 20th Street from two lanes to three lanes, make two intersection improvements, add curbs and gutters, and a shared-use path for pedestrians and cyclists along the entire project.
Emory Sapp and Sons, Inc. is the contractor for this $9.8 million project. Funding is through the Capital Improvement Sales Tax initiative passed in 2014 and renewed by voters in 2024, and is partially funded through the City and Jasper County ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act).
