Saki monkeys at Dickerson Park Zoo become first-time parents

Springfield’s Dickerson Park Zoo is pleased to announce the birth of a white-faced saki monkey.

The baby was born on January 14, 2025, to Cuyuni and Blackbeard. Cuyuni is an 11-year-old female and Blackbeard is a 10-year-old male; they are both first-time parents.

White-faced saki monkeys, also known as flying monkeys for their ability to leap between trees, are native to South America. A sexual dimorphic primate, at around two months males begin changing color from brown to black with white faces.

Females remain brown into adulthood. The animal care staff at DPZ does not yet know the sex of the baby.

“A baby will hang onto its mom for several weeks,” said head zookeeper Tracy Campbell.

“Cuyuni’s and Blackbeard’s baby is strong and healthy,” Campbell added.  “Typically in the winter, they would stay inside where it is warm. However, with the warmer temperatures forecasted this week, there is a good chance guests may see the baby.”
