Neosho state representative Ben Baker on COGE – state income tax

In a recent interview on KZRG Morning News Watch, Missouri State Representative Ben Baker, from Neosho, who chairs the Committee on Government Efficiency (COGE), detailed COGE’s upcoming hearing aimed at enhancing state government efficiency, including creating a framework for citizens and whistleblowers to report concerns.

One of the challenges related to remote work will likely be discussed in the hearing.

Baker told  Newstalk KZRG:  “Right now, for instance, on the federal level, one of the big items is just a common sense idea that people should be at work. You know, I think they said on the federal level still around 70% or more are still remotely working. And, you know, this is a simple thing that we can do to help efficiency in the state of Missouri. I think we’re still about 30% of our state workforce are remotely working. And I don’t think that’s what our citizens want. I don’t think it’s the best thing for efficiency.”

Baker also highlighted a review of state property usage and plans to potentially sell underutilized buildings. Insight into twelve forthcoming bills, covering areas such as tax reform and healthcare, alongside an exploration of eliminating state income tax, with the governor’s backing.

Although the topic of repealing personal property tax arose, Baker emphasized prioritizing income tax elimination first.

The interview concluded with discussions about the implications of the U.S. Census and redistricting, specifically regarding the Kansas Attorney General’s lawsuit related to counting non-citizens.
