Beards now O.K. for Springfield police officers, recruits
As of the New Year, the Springfield Police Department expanded its grooming standards for police officers to allow beards to attract more applicants to the department.
The change to Standard Operating Guideline 304.6, Police Uniforms and Appearance Regulations to include well-groomed beards was driven by significant interest within the department and recommended by current officers.
“The new beard policy reflects our commitment to evolving our grooming standards in a way that respects individuality while maintaining professionalism,” Chief Paul Williams said. “We believe this change will help us attract a broader range of qualified applicants, allowing officers to express themselves while continuing to serve Springfield with pride and discipline.”
Recruitment for the 80th Academy, set to begin June 2025, is ongoing. Go to gospd.com for more information and to apply online.
