MSSU to host Cancer Awareness Ceremony
JOPLIN, Mo. (Oct. 24, 2024) — The Missouri Southern Student Senate and the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs will honor breast cancer victims and survivors at a ceremony on Friday, October 25, 2024, at 12:30 p.m. in Lion Plaza (on the Oval in front of the Billingsly Student Center).
October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month and this event is intended to honor those who have died from breast cancer, have survived breast cancer, and to raise awareness among students, faculty, staff, and the community about breast cancer early detection and support services.
As part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the MSSU Student Senate is selling luminaries, which can be purchased in honor of loved ones who has died from breast cancer or is currently struggling with the disease.
During the ceremony on Friday, the names of those individuals for which luminaries have been purchased will be read aloud as to honor and remember their struggle.
Proceeds from the sale of luminaries, breast cancer pins, and “Minute to Win It” games for students will be sent to the Hope 4 You Breast Cancer Foundation, headquartered in Joplin. During the ceremony, Mrs. Mary Van Galen, a breast cancer survivor and Hope 4 You board member, will speak on the impact of this program.
Also speaking will be community member and cancer survivor Sue Landburg. Hope 4 You Breast Cancer
Foundation supports breast cancer awareness and support activities in twelve counties in Southwest Missouri, Southeast Kansas, Northeast Oklahoma, and Northwest Arkansas.
The event is open to the public, and media representatives are invited to attend. For more information about this event, contact Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at allgood-c@mssu.edu or 417-625-9394.
